Office 2007 Trial

G

Ginny

I installed the Office 2007 Professional Trail on my boss’s computer, which
was running Office XP Professional 2002. Of course I couldn't get the
Outlook 2007 to run. I understand from other postings that I need to
uninstall Outlook 2002. However, my boss no longer has his Office XP
Professional installation disk. If he decides not to upgrade to 2007, can I
re-install his Outlook 2002 without the Office XP Professional installation
disk?

Thanks in advance!

Hi JoAnn, thanks for the prompt reply. Outlook 2002 was already installed
before I downloaded the Office 2007 trial. He has been using Outlook 2002
since I've been his assistant for 1 year. My question is: if I uninstall
Outlook 2002 to run Outlook 2007 and it turns out he doesn't like Office
2007, can I reinstall Outlook 2002 if he no longer has the Outlook 2002
installation disk(s)?

Also, he did a test run on a Word 2007 document...He emailed it to me. I am
using Word 2000. It was my understanding that a "link" should have been
sent with the email asking me to download a compatibility "software" that
would allow a user of an older version to open a document from 2007. That
link was not provided. I followed the instructions provided when I tried to
open the document which said to go to my computer|view|options but I do not
have an options button under my computer|view. Therefore, I dragged the
document on to my desktop and tried to associate a program with the file by
doing an open with|Word. However, when opened it, the document was all
"symbols". I also tried changing the file name to just .doc but that didn't
work. I know he can do a File save as an older version but I am trying to
avoid him having to do that since he is not very "computer literate". Where
do I find the compatibility link for him to include in his emails to users of
older versions?

Thanks again for your assistance!!

No, if you don't have the disk, you can't install/reinstall it.

Do you know if the copy of Office was purchased separately or was purchased
with the computer?

As for the compatibility issue, I'm at work (Shhh!) and I need some time to
read back over everything. If someone else hasn't popped in, I'll try to get
back with you after work. The first part was much easier.

Try installing Belarc Advisor on the computer. It will give you the product
key, which you'd need anyway. In that same line is the ID number. If it came
with the computer, it will say OEM somewhere in there.

Unfortunately you are up a famous creek.

OEM software is limited to a specific system. Even if you had the CDs you
couldn't install it on another computer. If it hadn't been OEM, you could
contact Microsoft for a replacement for a nominal fee. They cannot replace
OEM software.

Honestly didn't look into the other issue. I was lazy last night after work.

I installed the Office 2007 Professional Trail on my boss's
computer,
which
was running Office XP Professional 2002. Of course I couldn't
get
the
Outlook 2007 to run. I understand from other postings that I
need
to
uninstall Outlook 2002. However, my boss no longer has his
Office
XP
Professional installation disk. If he decides not to upgrade
to
2007,
can
I
re-install his Outlook 2002 without the Office XP Professional
installation
disk?

Thanks in advance!

OK but to clarify, I wouldn't be reinstalling it on "another computer"...it
is the same computer.

OEM software is limited to a specific system. Even if you had the CDs you
couldn't install it on another computer. If it hadn't been OEM, you could
contact Microsoft for a replacement for a nominal fee. They cannot replace
OEM software.

Honestly didn't look into the other issue. I was lazy last night after work.

Hi JoAnn, thanks for the prompt reply. Outlook 2002 was already
installed
before I downloaded the Office 2007 trial. He has been using
Outlook
2002
since I've been his assistant for 1 year. My question is: if I

Outlook 2002 to run Outlook 2007 and it turns out he doesn't like
Office
2007, can I reinstall Outlook 2002 if he no longer has the
Outlook
2002
installation disk(s)?

Also, he did a test run on a Word 2007 document...He emailed it
to
me.
I
am
using Word 2000. It was my understanding that a "link" should
have
been
sent with the email asking me to download a compatibility
"software"
that
would allow a user of an older version to open a document from
2007.
That
link was not provided. I followed the instructions provided when
I
tried
to
open the document which said to go to my computer|view|options
but I
do
not
have an options button under my computer|view. Therefore, I
dragged
the
document on to my desktop and tried to associate a program with
the
file
by
doing an open with|Word. However, when opened it, the document
was
all
"symbols". I also tried changing the file name to just .doc but
that
didn't
work. I know he can do a File save as an older version but I am
trying
to
avoid him having to do that since he is not very "computer
literate".
Where
do I find the compatibility link for him to include in his emails
to
users
of
older versions?

Thanks again for your assistance!!

You can download the compatibility pack to open them but there's no
guarantee that something won't get lost in the translation.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...70-3ae9-4aee-8f43-c6bb74cd1466&displaylang=en

It makes more sense (in my humble opinion) for the file originator to save
the file as a 97-2003 version than to require the end user to download
something. Office 2007 has only been out less than 3 months. There are
probably more Office users who don't know that then there are users who've
already upgraded. I do a Save As for anything I'm sending out to others. For
my own use, I use the default format.

How to ask a question
http://support.microsoft.com/KB/555375

Hi JoAnn, thanks for the prompt reply. Outlook 2002 was
already
installed
before I downloaded the Office 2007 trial. He has been
using
Outlook
2002
since I've been his assistant for 1 year. My question is:
if
I
uninstall
Outlook 2002 to run Outlook 2007 and it turns out he
doesn't
like
Office
2007, can I reinstall Outlook 2002 if he no longer has the
Outlook
2002
installation disk(s)?

Also, he did a test run on a Word 2007 document...He
emailed
it
to
me.
I
am
using Word 2000. It was my understanding that a "link"
should
have
been
sent with the email asking me to download a compatibility
"software"
that
would allow a user of an older version to open a document
from
2007.
That
link was not provided. I followed the instructions
provided
when
I
tried
to
open the document which said to go to my
computer|view|options
but I
do
not
have an options button under my computer|view. Therefore,
I
dragged
the
document on to my desktop and tried to associate a program
with
the
file
by
doing an open with|Word. However, when opened it, the
document
was
all
"symbols". I also tried changing the file name to just
.doc
but
that
didn't
work. I know he can do a File save as an older version but
I
am
trying
to
avoid him having to do that since he is not very "computer
literate".
Where
do I find the compatibility link for him to include in his
emails
to
users
of
older versions?

Thanks again for your assistance!!

You'd have to have Outlook 2002 on the system before

Yea! It's nice to get some sort of resolution even if it's not completely
what you wanted to hear.

It makes more sense (in my humble opinion) for the file originator to
save
the file as a 97-2003 version than to require the end user to download
something. Office 2007 has only been out less than 3 months. There are
probably more Office users who don't know that then there are users
who've
already upgraded. I do a Save As for anything I'm sending out to others.
For
my own use, I use the default format.

Thanks. Would love to hear from you or anyone else that can answer my

OK but to clarify, I wouldn't be reinstalling it on "another
computer"...it
is the same computer.

:

Unfortunately you are up a famous creek.

OEM software is limited to a specific system. Even if you had the
CDs
you
couldn't install it on another computer. If it hadn't been OEM, you
could
contact Microsoft for a replacement for a nominal fee. They cannot
replace
OEM software.

Honestly didn't look into the other issue. I was lazy last night
after
work.

Good morning! I ran the Belarc Advisor on his computer and his
Windows
XP
Professional and Office XP Professional are OEM. The report gave
me
the
ID #
and product key for each. Does this mean I can uninstall his
Outlook
2002
and reinstall it without having installation disk(s)? Any luck
in
finding
any information about the compatibility issue with sending Office
2007
documents to users on prior versions?

:

Try installing Belarc Advisor on the computer. It will give you
the
product
key, which you'd need anyway. In that same line is the ID
number.
If
it
came
with the computer, it will say OEM somewhere in there.

Your secret is safe with me ;-) Appreciate any and all
information
you
can
provide when it is convenient for you. We are not sure how
his
Office
2002
was purchased. He can't remember and it was way before my
time
here.
Is
there a way to check?

:

Do you know if the copy of Office was purchased separately or
was
purchased
with the computer?

As for the compatibility issue, I'm at work (Shhh!) and I
need
some
time
to
read back over everything. If someone else hasn't popped in,
I'll
try
to
get
back with you after work. The first part was much easier.

I installed the Office 2007 Professional Trail on my

Herb Tyson [MVP]

Some computers have a restoration version of all of the OEM software stored
somewhere on the hard drive. If that's the case, you might indeed be able to
reinstall all or part of Office 2002 without having the CD. It's probably
worth poking around on the hard drive to see if such a folder or folders
exist.

Another thing to look for... In OEM versions, software such as Office,
Works, etc. aren't necessarily on a CD that has "Office" emblazoned on it.
If there is a packet that came with that computer, you might do well to
carefully scrutinize the fine print on the CDs. It might very well be that
you do still have Office 2002/XP on CD. Each time I buy a new computer, I
put all of the disks, paperwork, etc. that came with it into a gallon-sized
ziplock bag. That way, when amnesia has taken over, I can retrieve the
ziplock from my cabinet to refresh my memory. I mention this because
whatever disks, etc. that came with the computer might be neatly tucked away
in a filing cabinet, the box the computer came in (in a storeroom or closet,
for example), or somewhere else.

Still another possibility would be to do a complete backup (image is best)
of the hard drive before installing Office 2007. Then, if he needs to
revert, save any changed data files, then restore from backup.

Good luck!

I installed the Office 2007 Professional Trail on my boss's

which
was running Office XP Professional 2002. Of course I
couldn't
get
the
Outlook 2007 to run. I understand from other postings that

Professional installation disk. If he decides not to
upgrade
to
2007,
can
I
re-install his Outlook 2002 without the Office XP
Professional
installation
disk?

Thanks in advance!
