Office 2007 updates: "The installation of this package failed"

I had to reinstall Office 2007 due to an ActiveSync issue.
No sooner than I finished Windows Update prompted me for a truckload of
updates.
All downloaded OK but after what appeared to be installation, they all
failed:

Security Update for the 2007 Microsoft Office System (KB936960)
Security Update for the 2007 Microsoft Office System (KB936514)
Security Update for Microsoft Office Excel 2007 (KB936509)
Update for 2007 Microsoft Office System (KB932080)
Update for Word 2007 (KB934173)
Update for Office 2007 (KB934393)
Security Update for Office 2007 (KB934062)
Security Update for Microsoft Office Publisher 2007 (KB936646)
Update for Office 2007 (KB934391)
Update for Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 (KB937608)
Update for Outlook Junk Email Filter 2007 (KB942575)

I went ahead and manually downloaded all of the above and tried to install.
EVERY one fails with a generic error message: "The installation of this
package failed"
Needless to say the MS knowledge base is useless in deciphering such a
non-message...

Any ideas?

Sorry, but I'm italian and I don't speak english very well...
but..
..you may install "WindowsInstaller3.1-KB893803-v2-x86"....

In italian:
devi installare WindowsInstaller3.1-KB893803-v2-x86... dopo questo
aggiornamento gli update di office 2007 funzioneranno perfettamente
senza difetti..
parlo per esperienza personale..
per installarlo credo debba avere anche le framework 2.0 installate,
scaricabili dal sito microsoft gratuitamente...

Download "Windows Installer 3.1 Redistributable (v2)" and install the
Installer first.
Then install the Office 2007 Update!

It works for me on Windows XP SP2...
