Office 2007

I have installed microsoft office home and student 2007 on my computer which
is using XP.
I am unable to open any word files from older versions sent to me as
attachments in emails. The file types that have been sent are docx. I thought
that the program I had installed should open all older versions. I have tried
installing office updates from microsoft but nothing seems to work. Can
anyone offer advice on what I can do. Don't make your replies to complex as
I'm not an IT expert.

First a bit of clarification and a little more information is needed. You
stated you are unable to open files from older versions but then you
indicate the file types are .docx. The .docx file type is for Word 2007. Is
it possible the sender is using an older version of Word but is modifying
the file extension manually prior to sending? Did you try saving the
attachment to your local drive, starting Word and using File Open to open
the file? Additionally, what is the message you are encountering when you
try to open the file?

The file has not been changed manually. What happens is that when I double
click on the attachment it opens the dialogue box stating open/save/cancel if
I click either save or cancel the box shows the animation of a file being
transfered but nothing ever happens, no time to open comes up etc.

If you are clicking Save then the file will not automatically open after its
saved. You need to find where it's saved and open it from there. If you
click Cancel then you cancelled the action and nothing will happen.

It could also be you can't open the file attachment directly from your email
and instead you need to Save it to your local disk (such as save it on your
Desktop) and open it from there.
