Office 2k help navigation pane- can't enter search text

Hi, Having uninstalled Office 2k SR2 and reinstalled it
without service packs in the same location I now can't
enter text in the search fields for the hslp index or
answer wizard in EXCEL or WORD, but I can in FRONTPAGE.

The cursor appears as a double-headed horizontal arrow
over the fields I can't enter text into.

I've tried reinstalling, IE6 SP1 repair, and Windows 2000
SFC /SCANNOW, as well as searching the MS KB.

I'm running as admin.
