Office 97 wont open read only files

I have a problem when running Office 97 that when a read only office
document such as a word file is opened. if the file is opened as read
only i get an error stating that the file was unable to be opened.

However if i try to open the file without the read only attribute, the
file opens.

Does anybody know of a solution to this problem?

I have attempted to duplicate the problem with my Office 97 pro programs
using Excel, PPT and Word. It always opened the file if the file is read
only so I can't duplicate the problem you are having.

A simple solution would be to change the attribute of the file from read
only. If this file is coming from a CD copy it to the hard drive and then
right click on it in Windows Explorer, left click properties and uncheck the
Read Only attribute, then click OK.
