Confused in Michigan

I recently completely reinstalled windows XP Home Edition and SP2. Now I
can't reinstall Office 97. Error message is 16 bit Windows subsystem -
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT - The system file is not suitable for running
MS-DOS and microsoft windows applications.
