Office Application Unresponsive when disconnected from Internet

We have a LAN with a bunch of servers running Windows 2000/Active Directory.
Our firewall is a Checkpoint box which is configured as the gateway for all
the PCs. I've noticed that when the firewall is offline, Office applications
hang. They are unresponsive to the point of freezing the PC. Once the
Internet connection has been restored, they behave normally. We have an Open
license, however, I don't think that should matter. Why do MS Office
applications need to see the Internet, or perhaps it's just the gateway?
