Office Applications Hang - Forever

W

Will Rowland

While networking between two PCs, Office applications (Word, Excel, and
Access) hang. This happens intermittently. When it does occur “sometimesâ€
the message “(name of application) not responding†appears. Sometimes the
error message “network access interrupted†appears. Closing the application
has taken more than an hour at times. When it does close! On it’s own.

When the task manager is opened, it also displays the message that the
application is not responding. Closing the application still takes an
excruciating long time to exit & sometimes gives the error “network access
interrupted.â€
Due to the time involved a hard shutdown of both PCs is done.

This problem started in mid-October 2008. Both PCs had no changes to the
Office applications that had been running on each PC, Office 97 & Office Pro
2007. From 9-1-2007 until 10-16-2008, the Office applications ran fine
without ever hanging while networking.

LAN is wired.

PC 1 – XP Home, V2, SP3 / Pentium (R) 4, 2.8 GHZ, 1.5 GB Ram
Running older versions of Word, Excel, & Access
1-20-08 Office compatibility Pack SP1 installed
10-7-08 hot Fix Win XP
10-16-08 Security Update for 2007 MS Office System
10-16-08 thru 11-12-08 Nine (9) Security Updates for Win XP
11-12-08 Security Update for 2007 MS Office System
11-18-08 installed Office Pro 2007

PC2 - Vista Home Premium, SP1 / Intel (R) Core(TM) Duo. 1.8 GHZ, 2 GB Ram,
32 Bit
Office Pro 2007

Now both PCs are running the same versions of MS Office Pro 2007. The issue
is still occurring while PC2 is networking to PC1, even when there is no user
or application activity on PC1.

Thank You,
Will Rowland

Hi,

I don't think the problem is the network hardware.
I have exactly the same problem, office not responding when I DON'T have a
network. When connected to network, Office works fine.
It must be something inside Office that needs the network for running...

This makes it hard to use my laptop outside home (ie no wireless network
exists), and then the hwole idea of a 'laptop' is useless...

Hi: Neither PC has a problem connecting to the internet. PC2 connects to
the internet via the LAN to a router, splitter, then to either PC1 or the
internet.

Doesn't seem like it would be the network!

Hi Will,

yes, it seems so ;-)

I'm seriously think about going back to office 2003, that work without any
problems. And back to the oldfashion style of menues.... I hate this new
invention.
I have search for two weeks now of the default folder where office saves my
files, templates and more... I can't find the settings for it in Publisher...
