office applications hangup accessing subfolders in My Documents

When trying to open or save a file in any of the sub-folders located under My
Documents, all the Office 2003 applications stop responding. I have already
checked for viruses, cleaned the registry, and defragmented the disk. I even
removed and re-installed the whole Office Pro 2003 suite.
Any ideas?

I am having the same problem - started on the evening of 4/14/06 - I have
done everything CaliRuge wrote. You can open and save to the default folder
but can not access any sub folders and you just get the program "Not
Responding" then it exits and ask you to send a report to Microsoft. I did
notice that my system's auto-update happend on 4/14/06 as well but I can't
seem to find out how to remove or reverse this update to see if that would
fix the problem.

HELP!

I had the same problem, removed and re installed Office 2003, defragged no
resolution\

Hey ike,
Reading other posts I found that this problem was caused by Win Sec Update
KB908531. I removed and the problem went away.
Go to Add/Remove Programs, check the box (at the top) for Show Updates, then
go to the Win Updates and remove KB908531.
Hope this helps.

Have you taken any steps for it NOT to come back? Autoupdate will
inevitably bring it back unless you have blocked it as well. Have you
also considered the risk element of not getting auto-updates?

Considering how widespreaded and consistent the problem caused by the Sec
Update is, I am pretty sure MS will be doing something to correct it, very
soon. In the meantime I just dissabled the automatic installation of the
updates. I will continue to get notified, but will first try to review the
content and check if there's any mention of this issue. Only after I see they
make reference to correct this, I will install it.

When i attempt to open an old file or wish to save as to a folder, the
default my documents folder opens but i cannot open any sub folders. Cursor
changes to hour glass but system just hangs. This happen after a
securityupdat KB908531
