Office cannot open email attachments

Word and Excel cannot open email attachments. Also cannot open files using
"My recent documents" in the Windows start menu. The only way I can open a
file is to start the office program, and then use "File/Open".

Otherwise I get an error message about not being able to find the specified
file.

Anyone have a clue here? This is such a bizarre and basic situation it's
not covered in any FAQs.
