Is there a setting embedded somewhere that can be altered so that when you
click on the Close icon in the top right hand corner, instead of it closing
the program entirely (if in Word but no document is open for example), can it
come up with a confirmation of closing prompt?

If this is possible, can anyone direct me to it's whereabouts?

This would be a process controlled by the operating system and not the
program itself. The minimize, restore and exit on the right side as well as
the program icon on the left side of the bar are all under the control of
the OS. I have never heard of an XP workaround to do what you want but
there may be a tweak that would allow this. You will have to do a search for
additional information.
