Will Office 2004 installed on a Powerbook G4 read/operate Office 2003
WORD/EXCEL/POWERPOINT files created on a Windows XP system?

Not yet. I am considering switching back to a Mac based system, but need the
ability to access many Office documents generated on Windows over the last
several years...

Hi Neo,

You may want to also post in the Office:Mac newsgroups.
Often more folks there that work in both 'worlds' who
would have experience on specific concerns you may have.

The underlying file formats are the same, but sometimes
features, such as certain graphics formats, don't move
back and forth as one might wish without some prior planning
for 'dual platform' needs. (Links below).

The document contents should be readable on the Mac, but macros may be
problematic. Office 2003 (Windows) uses VBA6. Office 2004 (Mac), IIRC, uses
VBA5. Any VBA6-specific code will fail on Macs.

.... as will macros utilizing windows specific features (low level
programming, like calls to OS).

The OP indicates that the "targets" are his own documents, so they'll
probably be accessible without trouble (or he'll know how to fix them).

Yup, gotta figure the OP should know Windows API calls won't work under
MacOS.

Dunno about this. If the OP had macros with lots of Split, Join and Replace
calls, it could be a PITA to fix them.

It won't work the back way. I have now same trouble. Files created in MacOs
Microsoft 2004 are not readable on PC in Microsoft Office 2003.
By the way is somebody knows how to fix it would be thankfull for help.

Perhaps you may Save As some version before 2003? Or maybe the folks in
the mac.office group would know?
