Office Compatibility Pack cannot open docx file

Hello. I accepted a new job and "inherited" a pc that had had Beta Office
2007 installed. After the Beta expired, Office 2002 SP3 was reinstalled on
the pc. I have documents that were created with the Office 2007 version that
I am unable to open. When I attempt to open these docx files, I get a pop-up
that states "This is a pre-release version of the Compatibility Pack and can
open pre-release Office 2007 files only. Do you want to check for a newer
version of the Compatibility Pack?". If I click Cancel, the Word just opens
to a blank gray screen. If I click OK, a new page opens to the Office
Compatibility Pack download. I have downloaded and installed the
Compatibility Pack. It appears to install fine, but when I go to open a docx
file again, I get the exact same error message. The files I need to open
were created on 1/30/07 with Word 2007. My current version is Word 2002 SP3.
I have checked and am current with the latest Windows and Office updates.
Could someone please tell me how to access these documents? Thank you.

Hi Mich,

Determing which Office 2007 beta version generated files that are reusable without opening the .docx (zip) files, for example and
manually modifying them can get a bit complicated.

Generally (especially for Word) documents created in Word 2007 Beta 2 with Technical Refresh Update (expiring at the end of March)
can be opened with the compatibility pack or with Word 2007 release edition. Documents created in earlier betas may not work. The
chart in this article and the registry settings *may* help with trying to use the pre-release files. Basically the error message
isn't always correct :)

Try making sure you've installed *all* high priority Windows Updates (except
you don't have to install IE 7.0). This is required in order for the compat
pack to work.

That said, it might not resolve your problem because of the beta issue
thrown into the mix. But it might -- it's worth a shot.

I was plagued with this problem under Vista. I just upgraded to Windows 7 (Home Premium) and uninstalled the compatibility pack, downloaded it again from Microsoft, and reinstalled it. That seemed to fix it! I can now read docx files in Office XP (just as I used to be able to under Windows XP). The files are a bit slow to convert, but they do open.
