Office document icons are showing differently than they should

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: intel

Not exactly sure how to ask this.. I noticed that say a Word doc is saved either as a .doc or even a .docx, the icon that appears in my folder is just a plain white icon that says .doc or .docx. Where are the colored icons that shoud be represented (i.e. blue for Word, green for Excel, and orange for PowerPoint)? These colored icons appear within the Office applications themselves but not within the File Folders themselves. Is there a way to get Leopard to to use the stock Office Icons within the Folders View?

Thanks

I think someone with the same problem just posted:
"You need to turn off "show icon preview" in the view options for the
folder." That would be in the Finder, rather than in Office.

All indications are that this is caused by either the OS X feature called
Cover Flow or Quick Look - not sure which, perhaps both. It's being looked
at by MacBU but nothing definitive as yet.

I have the same problem. Have tried re-installing Mac OS X Leopard, re-installing MS Office, Software Update to 10.5.3, but no positive results. I guess I will try the two options given above.

Is there any update or fix for this issue?

You could be seeing is a new feature in Leopard where you actually
See a preview of your document as the icon. To change this then in
the Finder go to View --> Show View Options and disabled "Show icon
preview".

It could also be a Finder error. Try doing a Get Info and select the correct
application, then apply all. You also might need to do Repair Permissions.
You can also edit Type/Creator codes with XRay. XRay is a much-expanded
version of the Finder's "Get Info" window. It's US$10 shareware. Has a 15
day demo.

Does it open the correct application or does it just display the wrong icon?

Using Repair Permissions after installing MS Office or any application that
uses an installer is often advised. To use Repair Permissions:
1. Open Disk Utility in your Applications/Utility folder.
2. Click on the First Aid tab and select Repair Permissions
3. Click on the icon for your boot volume.
4. Click the repair permissions button.

Don't run from CD. Updates contain a newer versions of the application's
permissions.

Thanks for the response. I was able to fix the problem using Dalya Mitchell's suggestion. The solution is exactly what was the issue. Icons look exactly as they should.
