Office Home and Student 2007 Licenses

I purchased Office Home and Student 2007 and on the package it says licenses
for 3 PC's. Inside there is only 1 product key. When I installed the Mac
version a year ago for a friend it included 3 product keys, 1 for each
installation. My first question is should there be 3 product keys or do I
use the same key for all 3 installations? My second question is that 1 of
the computers currently is running XP Pro but I plan to add Vista with a dual
boot option. I believe installing on the same computer should count as a
single install but will it see 2 installations under 2 OS's on 1 computer as
2 installations?
Thanks for any help.

First off, always read the EULA. It usually answers in clear legalize
license questions. For Windows you get one key that can be used three
times on different computers. (Reinstalling Office on the same
computer on the same OS does not count as using a second key. You're
still using the first.) As to the dual boot, read the EULA, but I
believe that M$ defines that as using two computers and two Office
licenses.

Thanks, I like "clear legalize", talk about an oxymoron. To get back to my
questions, the EULA doesn't really address installation issues which is more
in line with what I was asking about. Microsoft used to use 3 seperate
product keys for the 3 installs, I received 1 key. Will the 1 key support 3
installations? As far as my second question, Office is licensed for "one
machine, one user", there is nothing about OS so I should be able to install
under XP Pro and Vista and it should count as a single install. I've read
the EULA and searched multiple forums and I'm curious if anybody has actual
experience or is from Microsoft and can give a concrete answer.

Hi P.J.,

While the key is requested during installation, it's only validated later on, during online or phone activation. It's at that point
that any limitations 'set in'. There's only one product key per retail package in Office products. Separate keys are used in
enterprise/volume license and OEM products, which don't have licenses for multiple installations per license.

The license agreement does mention 'partitions'.

That's a different issue. I would suggest starting a new thread - and I'd
start with an IE newsgroup.

I found answer on Microsoft license page. You are allowed to make copy of
install disk to use to reinstall. Other problem is word has changed all my
microsoft files to read only. Any ideas?
Thanks for responding
