Office Home & Student 2007

I bought a copy of Office and when I try to download templates, I'm asked
for the 25 character key. When I type it in I'm told the key is incorrect.
Two questions: Why do they want the key, and what do I do now?

Jeff

J

Jeff Stanton

I'm entering the key on the inside of the plastic box the software came in.
It's the same key I entered to register the software.

You shouldn't be asked for a product key when downloading templates. (That's
the one on the inside of the CD.) I wonder if it's asking you to activate?
(You still have to activate the software after you install it.) Try opening
Word and going to Office Button | Word Options | Resources | Activate. If
you use the web activation, it will give you an activation code to type in
(or maybe it's inserted automatically, I can't remember). If you use the
phone activation, a person will give you an activation code to input. Either
way, you should then be able to download templates without being prompted
for a code/key.

The templates that I can't download (for both Word and Excel) all are from
the Microsoft web site. When the site attempts to validate the software,
I'm told that the software (Office Home and Student 2007) completed
validation. Then it tells me that no valid Office key was detected, and that
it's a strong indication that the product installed is not genuine.
The key I entered when I installed the software was accepted, and the
product was purchased from BestBuy in a new, sealed plastic box.
I have nno idea what else I can do to convince them that I don't have
pirated software.

You might have a corrupt license file. Try deleting the OPA12.DAT file
as described in http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=919895 "How to
troubleshoot problems that you may experience when you try to activate a

I followed your suggestion, to no avail. I deleted OPA12.dat as outlined by
Microsoft, then ran activation on both Office Home & Student, as well as
Publisher 2007 (this version of office doesn't have it), then tried to
download a theme for Word. I got a message saying "This computer failed
Validation.", even though the validation was accepted when performed. The
message said that both Office Home & Student and Publisher completed
validation, but that "2007 Microsoft Office system: Validation Failed" and
that "This is a strong indication that the Office product installed is not
genuine."
Both products were purchased at BestBuy, and I have the receipts to prove
it. What would you suggest at this point?

Are individual components from an earlier Office version installed on
the computer? For example, some people who have Office 2007 will
install proofing tools from Office 2003 or earlier to enable spellcheck
in Outlook Express or MSN (neither of which are Office applications, by
the way), and installing an individual component without installing the
core components from an Office suite can cause the validation issue you
describe.

I would contact Microsoft at this point.

http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?gprid=8753

Click Home and Student.

If you then click "how to purchase support," you'll see

"Customers who have purchased their software from a retailer (known as
shrink-wrapped software) please observe the following support policy:

"90 days No-charge Support included with Software Purchase

"Customers who purchase full packaged products (consumer products, desktop
applications, desktop operating systems) will receive 90 days of no-charge
assistance via phone, starting from either the product activation or the
first incident."

Finding a phone number to call is harder. :)

Hit Contact Us at the bottom of the page.

No, don't do that -- unless you're in Australia.

Go to http://support.microsoft.com and click ...

No, don't do that, either. All the "contact us" links go to Australia
support right now. I'll have to dig up a link or number for you. Or maybe
someone else will post one.

You shouldn't be asked for a product key when downloading templates.

There was no other version of Office on this computer. It's a new laptop
purchased to replace an older one that had an earlier version of Word, but I
didn't move anything. The only other Office program installed is Publisher
2007. I activated each component when I first opened it. In each case, the
activation wizard started automatically and indicated sucessful activation.

Can you give us an example of one of the templates that causes this for
you? (preferably also a link to it)

What is the exact text of the message you're receiving that asks for
the key?

I have already activated my copy of Office. This is wht I don't
understand why I'm asked for the Product Key again.

Jeff

You shouldn't be asked for a product key when downloading templates.
(That's the one on the inside of the CD.) I wonder if it's asking you
to activate? (You still have to activate the software after you
install it.) Try opening Word and going to Office Button | Word
Options | Resources | Activate. If you use the web activation, it
will give you an activation code to type in (or maybe it's inserted
automatically, I can't remember). If you use the phone activation, a
person will give you an activation code to input. Either way, you
should then be able to download templates without being prompted for
a code/key.

Okay, then I'm out of ideas. Take Echo's advice about contacting
Microsoft.

Jeff said:
There was no other version of Office on this computer. It's a new laptop
purchased to replace an older one that had an earlier version of Word, but I
didn't move anything. The only other Office program installed is Publisher
2007. I activated each component when I first opened it. In each case, the
activation wizard started automatically and indicated sucessful activation.

Are individual components from an earlier Office version installed on the
computer? For example, some people who have Office 2007 will install
proofing tools from Office 2003 or earlier to enable spellcheck in Outlook
Express or MSN (neither of which are Office applications, by the way), and
installing an individual component without installing the core components
from an Office suite can cause the validation issue you describe.

Jeff Stanton wrote:

I followed your suggestion, to no avail. I deleted OPA12.dat as outlined
by Microsoft, then ran activation on both Office Home & Student, as well
as Publisher 2007 (this version of office doesn't have it), then tried to
download a theme for Word. I got a message saying "This computer failed
Validation.", even though the validation was accepted when performed. The
message said that both Office Home & Student and Publisher completed
validation, but that "2007 Microsoft Office system: Validation Failed"
and that "This is a strong indication that the Office product installed
is not genuine."
Both products were purchased at BestBuy, and I have the receipts to prove
it. What would you suggest at this point?

You might have a corrupt license file. Try deleting the OPA12.DAT file
as described in http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=919895 "How to
troubleshoot problems that you may experience when you try to activate a
2007 Office product", and then activate the software again.

Ah, and if you have your settings set to the appropriate country, you do get
appropriate numbers and such to call. (Turns out I'd changed my settings to
Australia to try to help resolve some user's issue, and completely forgot
about it. And when I asked another MVP what information she was getting when
she clicked the support link below, well...she was also getting Australia
info because she'd done the same to try to track down the same issue awhile
back! LOL! We're numbskulls sometimes, what can I say?!)

Anyway, you can go to http://support.microsoft.com and click "Microsoft
Worldwide" over on the right side of the page. That gets you to a page where
you can set your location, and after doing that, you should be able to get
to the correct phone numbers when you hit "contact us."

Hey garfield-n-odie" I have the same problem with validation, but I have
also transfered an older, Authorized, verson of publisher from my previous

I have product codes, cert of authenticity, everything. What can I do to
