Office Hyperlinks to picture files open with wrong program

I insert hyperlinks to jpg or gif files in Word documents (Office 2002, Win
XP). These file types are associated with Irfanview but when I click on the
hyperlink, the image opens in MS Photo Editor.

How can I make these files open with the correct program?

I'm not sure Word will recognize Irfanview, but you can try it under
Tools-->Options, Edit tab, Picture Editor...
