office locks up when saving files to hard drive

When files are save to hard drive office 2003 locks up. I have to end task to
get out of it. The hard drive has lots of room left.

you didn't mention if you applied this month's patches, but my guess is...

If nervous about editing the registry, then go to
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm (site ran by a fellow MVP).
Scroll down to 383 and click on the HP share to web fix link. The hp.vbs
file will make the necessary registry edits.
