Office Pro 2007 Upgrade - Works 9.0 Ineligible?

P

Pravda

I just purchased the Microsoft Office Professional 2007 Upgrade to install
on my new HP PC withVista Home Premium. On the spine of the Office Pro 2007
Upgrade packaging, it clearly states that "Microsoft Works 6.0-10" is one of
the Microsoft products which makes you eligible for the Upgrade version. I
was also assured of this by the salesperson where I purchased the software.
Microsoft Works 9.0 came pre-installed on my new PC, yet when I try to
install the Office Pro 2007 Upgrade, it states that it "Cannot find a
previous eligible version of Office". When I click the browse button to
point it to the Works 9.0 folder, it does not accept it and the installation
won't continue.

Can anyone tell me what the problem is here? It seems pretty clear to me
that I have an Upgrade eligible Microsoft application on my PC that it is
not accepting for some reason. Thanks in advance for your help.

Works is always a full OEM version. Works Suite is the retail upsell.

Hi Pravda,

There's a bug in doing that upgrade that can be resolved with the information here:

Bob,

It is the full version of MS Works 9 with the word processor, spreadsheet,
database, calendar, and portfolio applications. Definitely not a trial
version.

Thanks Bob, I will try the bug fix. I was thinking it had to be something
like this because nothing else made any sense. But I must say that I'm kind
of surprised that this wasn't addressed by now via an automatic Windows
Update. I bought this PC with Works 9 three months ago and I can't believe
that many others haven't had this very same problem.

Thanks again!

backburner

When I try to download the update, I get a message asking me to insert my CD.
But, since my Works 9 is OEM, I don't have a CD. Anyone know what I should
do? Thanks!

I have the same problem. If anyone has a solution to the OEM issue I would
greatly appreciate it.

I actually groped around a little and got the upgrade to work. The trick is
to burn your own back-up disks. (Start menu (all programs) --> PC Help &
Tools --> Recovery Disk Creator.

From there, I searched the disks for the file that the patch said it needed.

I can't be more specific, unfortunately, since I'm more of a
try-this-try-that kind of user. Hopefully getting as far as a disk in hand
will be enough to help you fix this.

Hi Joe,

Did you try downloading the patch listed in the previous message?

Yes I did. However, when I install the patch, it prompts me to insert the
Works 9 CD, which I don't have, since I have an OEM pre-installed version.
Microsoft said that the OEM is liable for a workaround since they installed
Works 9 (Catch 22 anyone?). I'll try creating a recovery disk like Backburner
suggested. Thanks everyone. I'll let you know how things work out.

SUCCESS! My computer came with a trial version of Office 2007 Home & Student.
I installed that and was then able to install the upgrade to Office 2007
Professional without any problems.
