Please review the min. hardware req for XP. I would double them as an
acceptable perfomance minimum, and compare it against what you have in
your hands.

Bob - My computer is 5½ yrs old. I upgraded it to XP Pro about a year and a
half ago and I run Office 2003 Pro just fine. :)

And how does it compare the the min. hardware specs? Notice the age
wasn't mentioned. ;-) A bargain box is a lot different from a quality PC
and after loading all the requisite "protective" software, a bargain
box(min req. hardware) is dead in the water.

What would you consider to be a quality PC?, I am getting so confused about
which would be the best one, I currently have an EMachines, had a Compac
previously.

It meets/exceeds them. :) It's a 550 but I've run software that says 700.
Not quickly but it does work.

First clue - any computer than costs you less than $1000 is not what I would
consider a quality computer. But this is only MY opinion. I used to sell
computers and I custom configured my own system. I've added RAM and a second
hard drive but that's it. She's been real good for me.

I've already played with the specs for my next system. If I get out under
$2000 I'll be happy.

Yes, that would be what I call a performance issue. Bout 800MHz and
256MB ram and a addon video card, would be acceptable in my book for any
Office applications. Turning off the XP fisher-price interface does an
amazing bit of good in improving system response to user input.

I'd say something in the 6-800 dollar range from Dell would do nicely
ans long as you don't plan on loading Windows Vista, and MS Office 12.
Then you could plan on getting 5-6 years out of it.

I run RM Innovator PIII (http://www.rm.com) with 256 mb ram and it works fine
with me. I have Office Pro Enterprise Edition and Visio Pro 2003.

I also use the usual applications such as Adobe Acrobat 7.0, Roxio 7.5, Nero 6.5,
Nortons systems Works 2002 professional, MS Antispyware Beta1. MS Visio Studio
2005.

I intend to install an additional 256 mb RAM module in the new year. the machine
should last me for the next 2 years or so. It is 5 years old at present.

Fisher-Price interface? I love it! I can deal with it but my husband HATES
the XP look. It *does* look like a kid's toy, doesn't it?
