I have windows xp home edition and am needing to know if office professional is compatable with windows home edition?

Also, any information would be appreciated as I am new to office.

You'll be fine. As far as MS OS's Office XP can run on all the OS's back to
98 on up to and after XP when that happens. An easy way to tell the system
requirements for any Microsoft software is to just put the name of the
software into google or any search engine. I find that better than
Microsoft's revamped site search engine right now which leaves much to be
desired.

Office 2003 System Requirements

You can run Office 2003 "officially" on Office 2000 SP3 or newer or Windows
2000 Server or newer.
