Office - repeated installation

I have been using Office 2000 on Win XP Pro without any problem. In
fact I have only installed Word and Outlook. Now, with no apparent
explanation I get messages saying "Preparing to install" and "This MSI
must be launched through setup". If I click on these three times they
disappear and the program starts. I have uninstalled, cleared any
"office" items out of the Registry and re-installed, making sure to
select the right options, but the same sequence repeats. Since this is
only recent could it be caused by a Win XP update (I have this on
automatic). Anyone now how to cure it? I've Googled and looked on the
MS knowledgebase.

Sounds like a Norton problem not Office. Office will call
out to the internet. this is why you probably get the
message.
XP sp2?
I would disable MS XP firwall. Try it then. if you get the
error disable Norton firewall for five minutes. This will
tell you where your problem is. These two programs do not
play nice with each other. I disabled my MS firewall and
just use Norton. Everything works fine now.
If you get the error with Norton on but not off, Your
setting for Office it "blocked" change it to permit.
Hope this helps!
If not Sorry. that is when I got this error.

Thanks for your help Chris. I've got Sp2 but the XP firewall is
disabled. My firewall is Zone Alarm. I've tried turning it off but it
makes no difference to the problem. I'm using Norton AV and turning
that off makes no difference.
Nevertheless I appreciate your advice

Have you recently upgraded to Norton Anti-virus 2005 using the default
installation? If so, you added a firewall {called worm protection} which
may conflict with Zone Alarm.

As far as I know, the only way to turn Norton Anti-virus off is to uninstall
the program. Right clicking on the taskbar icon and selecting disable only
turns off the auto-protect background scan.

When anyone is using Norton Anti-virus with Office and a problem occurs, the
first suggestion is usually to clear the Office Plug-in under Norton
Anti-virus options.

Sorted now by uninstalling Norton AV. Office loads normally and I've
replaced Norton with AVG. Seems a change for the better - AVG found a
trojan that Norton had missed!

Thanks Don for your full response to my problem. If I'd seen your item
before I'd uninstalled Norton AV, I'd have given your prescription a
try. As it is I've got Office running as it should and have replaced
Norton with AVG - which found a Trojan Norton had missed! I have been
getting impatient with Norton's overblown complexities for sometime
and I'm now thinking it's time to part company altogether.
However I'm grateful to you for your help. Always good to know what's
causing the problem
