Office Shortcut Bar (Office XP)

MS Office XP came installed on my Dell PC (running Windows
XP). I can't find the Office Shortcut Bar. It does not
appear on the Microsoft Office Tools menu. Also, when I
check the online Help, the text refers to Windows versions
2000, 98, and ME but doesn't mention XP. Is this feature
still available, and if so, where is it hiding?

When I called Dell support they didn't have a clue.

Thanks.

hi Fifi,

The Office Shortcut Bar exists in Office XP, not in Office 2003.
For Office XP use Add/Remove Programs in the Windows
Control Panel, select Microsoft Office and change the
feature set to have the Office Shortcut Bar tool
set to 'run from my computer'.

Windows XP and Windows 2003 were not available when Office XP
was released, so they're not always mentioned in Help.

Insert Office CD. Go to Start to Control Panel to
Add/Remove Programs. Highlight Office XP and click on
Change. Office Shortcut Bar can be installed under
Office Tools.

On my installation CD, under Office Tools, both Photo Editor AND Shortcut Bar are flagged with a big red X = "not available". What's up with this? The only thing unique about the CD is that the case if marked (correctly) as "Academic Edition". Perhaps MS short-changed the students??????

The 'big red x' means those options aren't installed. To install them, open
control panel, add/remove programs, and re-run Office setup, selecting 'run
from my computer' for these items.

Debbie - Thank you - The legends associated with the icons on the CD were not very clear. After some struggling, I now have the shortcut bar appearing at start-up. So, next question - under Windows ME, there was an icon in the Office Shortcut Bar for Windows Explorer. I don't see that same icon in the XP version of the OSB. How do I add this or other icons to the OSB?

Right click on the Shortcut bar, click on Customize. Select the second tab,
then Add File. Browse to Windows folder, then select Explorer. Click on Add
and close. You should now have Windows Explorer on your OSB.
