Office Standard Being Phased Out?

M

Mike Hartsough

I have Office XP Standard. I would like to upgrade to Office 2003 Standard,
but it seems like no one "carries" it.

I see ads all the time for '03 Pro and '03 Student/Teacher, but never any
ads for '03 Standard. '03 Pro upgrade frequently sells for less than '03
Standard upgrade.

Can I upgrade XP Standard to '03 Pro or '03 Student/Teacher?

Thanks,
Mike

Thanks for the link Tom.

It points out my comment about the pricing of Std. vs. Pro. I have seen ads
for Pro Upgrade for well under $200, but Std Upgrade is always well over
$200. It's as though MS is directing people away from Std.

Office 2003 Professional includes all the applications in Office 2003
Standard plus additional applications. If you find a price for an upgrade to
Office 2003 Professional less than an upgrade to Office 2003 Standard, then
choose the Professional. If you do not need the additions, such as Access,
then do a custom install and install only those applications you use. I
suspect that what you are seeing prices and availability are vendor stocking
decisions. In the preview price list for Office 2007 {
http://www.microsoft.com/office/preview/pricing.mspx }, Microsoft still
lists a Standard edition.

Hi Mike,

The MS Office 2003 Student/Teacher's Edition is a special packaging of MS Office 2003 Standard Edition. The Student Teacher Edition
sells for less than the Standard Edition upgrade price (list) and the Student-Teacher Edition allows 3 installations. While folks
are asked to meet qualification criteria for the ST&E edition often saving money is the deciding factor.

The drawback to the S&TE is that it's not an upgradable edition, but the pricing for the 2007 Home & Student edition may make that a
non-issue for a number of people. http://microsoft.com/office/preview
