I was considering upgrading to Panther (10.3) but I am running

It will work fine. Be sure to install the updates from this URL
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx
Then run Disk Utility First Aid to repair permissions.
After that, everything should be superb.

BTW, the only difference between the Student Edition and the regular
edition is the price...

And the fact that the Student & Teacher Edition includes three CD keys.
