office transfer to new computer

If you purchased Office preinstalled with the computer, then it's most
likely an OEM version and the license belongs to the computer, not
you. So no...you can't reinstall it elsewhere.

If you bought a boxed version, then the license belongs to you and you
can install it elsewhere if you're removing it from an old computer.

But as with anything...when in doubt, read the rules in the license
agreement that came with your version.

What if it was a Trial version that you then purchased the full rights to?

My laptop had the Trial version of Office 2003. It was destroyed in a car
accident last week (the screen broke.) I have purchased a new laptop (almost
identical) and it has the same trial version. I don't want to have to pay for
it again. If I had bought it at the store I would have the disk. I can't even
access the old version to find out what my product key was.

Thanks

If you registered it...then you can call Microsoft and tell them what
happened. They're quite good about helping folks get reset in
situations like that. I've talked with lots of people who have had
"special" situations and when they report back (those who do) tell me
it worked out great.

So give them a call, tell them the situation you should be able to get
a key to get rolling again. However, it will depend on your license
and who held the license...you or the computer. To be honest with
you...I haven't looked into these new preinstalled trial version
licenses in details...so I'm not sure if you get a license like a
boxes version or an OEM version. It might fall to your PC warranty if
it belonged to the PC.

Good luck...
