office update erased and restored computer to original

Yesterday, I went to the Microsoft Office update and downloaded whatever was
the latest update. I didn't restart my computer after the update, but I did
at the end of the work day. Now this morning, I find my documents are gone,
the desktop, settings are all restored to the original settings!! I thought
I had the recovery option set, but when I go in there it says the recovery
setting is not on.
When looking at the D hard drive it is showing that it's almost full, so I'm
wondering if the computer did save everything?
Why would an UPDATE erase all of my documents and restore the computer to
the original settings!!!
How do I check the recovery file on the D drive? I cannot figure this out
and I'm pretty computer savvi.
Has this happened to anyone else? Any suggestions besides back up your
files. Which I do have some backed up online.. but still.. UG

I have never heard of an Office update wiping someone's computer. Where did
you go for your update? I hope it wasn't from an e-mail supposedly from
Microsoft Security Update or some other such bogus e-mail.
