Office UpDate

Bobby Atkins

Is anyone having the same difficulty trying to access
OFFICE UPDATE????

It keeps telling me I'm using a browser less than 5.01,
Netscape or Mac / Apple??? I run Windows XP Professional,
which is browser IE 6.0 and has Service Pack 2. I have
tried to access with Office XP Professional and until
yesterday, that didn't work. Yesterday I downloaded
Office 2003 Professionl, just received, and that damn
thing doesn't work either!!!

Thanx

Copy of email sent to Microsoft: Regarding Office UpDate
Page and their requesting me to file a support issue, of
which will go against my No Charge claims number. I have
been trying to update office since and before I just
loaded Office 2003, yesterday.

To Microsoft: 12/15/03

This isn't a support case, to be added or charged against
me because it is a screw up caused by Microsoft. See the
attached vueprint of the full page I keep receiving FROM
Microsoft...

My web browser is Internet Explorer 6, with service pack
2 and operating system is Windows XP Professional. so
tell me how I could be accessing the Office Update with a
browser less than 5.01 or Netscape, which is the display
I keep seeing???? The displayed also alludes to my maybe
be using a MAC / APPLE browser for access???

Hi Bobby,

Are you using Norton Internet Security or another, similar,
3rd party product. Some of them can feed false information
and that can be one thing that causes the false message you're seeing.

Hi, Bobby - and Bob.

NIS is almost certainly the culprit. I had the same frustration on both
Windows Update and Office Update. At first I "solved" the problem by
temporarily Disabling NIS before going to the WU and OU sites. Once I "got
past the gatekeeper" on either site, I could download everything I needed,
even if I re-enabled NIS.

I tried many settings in NIS under AntiVirus and Intrusion Detection, with
no help. Finally, I found instructions hidden many mouse-clicks deep on the
Symantec website. Here's the (very long - watch out for wrap!) URL:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...Document&prod=&ver=&src=sg&pcode=&svy=&csm=no

The secret settings are in NIS under Privacy Control - of all places! Click
Privacy Control | Configure | Advanced. In the long list of programs, be
sure you have microsoft.com and, under that, windowsupdate.microsoft.com;
click Add Site if you don't. Then click the Global Settings tab and change
the top setting (Information about your browser) from Use default settings
to Permit.

That oughta do it.

I'm amazed that, this long after NIS 2004's appearance, neither MS nor
Symantec have figured out how to make this work better! :>( The error
messages on the MS sites simply send us off on a wild goose chase. WU says
we need to be running Windows; OU says we need IE6. Both are obviously
wrong and misleading.
