Office won't open

Version: v.X Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel Hi,
I was working on an Excel file this morning when it 'quit unexpectedly' (which it does fairly regularly). However, this time when I tried to reopen it, it wouldn't reopen and crashes every time. I also tried opening Word and Powerpoint and those applications wouldn't open either. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Office, but still none of the applications will open properly. What can I try next?

Thanks, in anticipation, for your help.

I was working on an Excel file this morning when it 'quit unexpectedly' (which
it does fairly regularly).

If you haven¹t dealt with fonts since upgrading to Snow Leopard, see this
link for help. Office X install fonts in the User¹s Library/Fonts folder.
You can delete all. Run Font Nuke to delete font caches. This article is
mainly for Office 2008, but it shows you how to run Font Book to check all
fonts.

Microsoft fonts to delete after installing Snow Leopard (includes help
deleting font caches)

What can I try next?

Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Accounts. Switch to the
New User by logging out/in or use Fast User Switching. Test Office there.
If it opens in the new User, then the problem is in your User¹s account.

Thanks for your reply. I have done all that you suggested (running Font Nuke, disk utility etc). When I created a separate user account, Office does work on that new account, but still not in the main user one.

Since it works in a new User, check this link for other options that could be causing the problem. Some users have found it easier to move to the new User.

Actually - just another thing I noticed. In the Preferences folder, there is only one com.microsoft file, whcih is com.microsoft.OfficeNotifications.plist. Don't know if that is an issue, but these links seem to refer to many other ones that perhaps should be there as well. There is also a Microsoft folder there.

That link seems to just relate to Entourage problems.

There are several that have to do with Entourage, but the part on
preferences are what you need to concentrate on to solve your problem.
I don't actually use
Entourage, and didn't even install it on the Reinstall this time, so I don't
suppose it can be that that is causing the problems?

You save very little space and it can cause problems.

You should definitely have more com.microsoft...plist files. Compare what
you see in your User's folder to the test User.

This could be a permissions issue. Run Repair Permissions in Disk Utility.

Both accounts have the same plist files (i.e. only the one com.microsoft one). I've run Repair Permissions again and still the same problem.

Should I switch to the other User, do you think?

Thanks for your continuing support.

Are you saying the new User has only the one com.microsoft....plist file?
Did you make any changes in Office in the new User?

To switch to the new User, move all your documents and files to Shared then
copy to the new User.

it gives you an option to send the report to Apple. Would it be useful to see this report?

If the Apple reporter comes up, this indicates it’s not a Microsoft problem, but a system problem. You could post the first part, but generally it takes a developer to read these logs.

I suggest you first try downloading the latest Snow Leopard combo and run it over your system. (a combo will install over the same version) This will update and refresh your system files. If this does not work you can install Snow Leopard from the DVD over itself. It will not erase your files. You will then need to update Snow Leopard from 10.6.0 to 10.6.3 using the 10.6.3v1.1 combo.

Version: 10.0.0 (10.0.0)

You are using the original version of Office X that has never been updated.
If you update it might work. Microsoft Office v. X for Mac 10.1.9 Update
release date 1/5/2007 (This update includes all of the improvements released
in all previous Office v. X updates.)

If you don't need Exchange you can get Office 2008 very reasonably from
Amazon with free shipping. $109.99 (price can vary slightly)
