Office X Identity Incompatible With Office 2004 Identity

After several happy years using Entourage X on a PowerBook G4, I upgraded my
hardware to MacBook Pro (Intel-powered, 10.4.8) and transferred Entourage X
with its Office X Identities; all was fine (and working much more rapidly).

Going whole hog, I upgraded to Office 2004, but Entourage 2004 informs me
that "This identity cannot be opened with this version of Entourage." and
immediately quit. The "Getting Started" booklet tells me that Step 3 of the
Setup Assistant offers me to opportunity to import Office Identities from a
previous version of Entourage.

Unfortunately, I can find no such option for Step 3 in Setup Assistant.

My Entourage X Identity is quite large and I have no interest in starting
over from scratch.

Am I locked forever into Entourage X?

Is there a workaround available?

The error message you're getting suggests to me that your Office v.X
identity has already been imported into Entourage 2004. Have you by any
chance made any modifications to Office 2004, such as reinstalling it? The
error message means that the database Entourage 2004 is trying to access was
modified by a newer version of Entourage 2004, so your version cannot read
it. If you update Office 2004 (that should be version 11.3.4; download the
updates automatically via Microsoft AutoUpdate or manually on the Mactopia
website), you should be able to launch Entourage again and have access to
your Office identity. If that isn't the case, post back and we'll try
something else.

You are, of course, quite correct. I _had_ attempted to re-install -- my
first attempt to install was by "drag and drop", but it was going so slowly
I figured (incorrectly) that it had gotten "hung", so I quit and tried Setup
Assistant.

My Office 2004 version was 11.0.0 and, as you advised, I (auto-)upgraded
serially through 1.1.2, 11.3.3 to 11.3.4, after which I was politely invited
to import my Entourage X Main Identity.

All is well now and I am now engaged in learning the new version.

QUESTION? -- I had previously (in Entourage X) exported some correspondence
into exterior "mailbox" folders. Will I have problems in bringing them back
into Entourage 2004?

Thanks for your prompt and accurate response(s).

Hi Nicholas,

glad I could help. To answer your question: when you say "export", do you
mean dragging a folder from the folder list to the desktop to create a .mbox
file? If yes, then importing these files into Entourage 2004 couldn't be
easier; just drag them back into the folder list. Again, if you have tried a
different method, post back and give a few more details.
