Office XP application can not open files

I can not open Office XP data files.
Errors:
Word: The file XXX is not available.
Excel: Unable to read file.
PPT: Powerpoint can't read XXX
All other applications work fine.
I have reinstalled Office XP, no help.
I have installed patches to OS and Office, no help.
Could it be a registry problem?
