someone gave me a computer, never had one before, when
they gave to me, it came with no cds or diskettes; i just
took my computer to tech guy to fix some errors, he supped
me with more ram and memory, however most information for
office xp was lost and it wants the cd; how can i acquire
a copy of this so i'm not unable to use the programs?
in word, when i try to type it says this command
unavailable because document is locked for edit. i'm
assuming this is due to missing data. can anyone help me?

thanks!

Hi Sue

The probable cause of the locked documents is that your copy of Office
hasn't been activated, or that whatever the tech guy did wiped out the
activation key. See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=293151 for
information about this.

You can try just opening Word and clicking Help > Activate Product. This
will attempt to use the Internet to do (or re-do) the activation. If it
fails, you'll have to call Microsoft Product Support.

You should get back in touch with whoever gave you the computer and ask for
the disks, in case you need to reinstall. Your only other course is to buy a
new copy. If all you need from Office is Word, the cheapest way is probably
to buy Works Suite, which includes the same version of Word that's in Office
(but don't install the Works Add-In for Word, or uninstall it if it gets
installed automatically -- it causes various problems).
