I have just bought a notebook with Office XP already installed but without
original discs. I tried to register it but I got 'Already Registered' I have
since downloaded all the rellavent updates but 'New Office Doc 'button is
still grayed out!

Whoever sold you that laptop should have given you the CDs if it came with
the laptop. If it was purchased separately and they were going to keep
Office for themselves, it should have been uninstalled. You need to talk to
the seller.

I should have explained that the computer is new and bought from a reputable
national retailer. The software is installed and registered presumably by the
manufacturer so why is the OK button grayed out?

That being the case, you need to contact the manufacturer. Especially since
Office XP is not the current version, Office 2003 is. Sounds like they have
some explaining to do.

I have now found out that the Office programmes are 'Bios Locked' but I
cannot find any further info on the subject even on this site...

The product activation code is locked onto the BIOS. That means that version
of Office will only work on a specific brand of computer. (And apparently
not the brand you own.) If you bought both the system and software
together, then you need to go back to the retailer and scream bloody murder.

I'm curious where you would have recently purchased a computer with Office
XP installed on it. That is an older version. Office 2003 is the current
version.
