Depends on license version. May be while in school only or employed only or
it may be a perpetual license while you were a student. We can't answer
that question. If you have never been employed or a student and obtained it
through the school, you would be in violation of the license agreement but
this version is no longer supported by MS so.... It still needs to be
activated.

You are supposed to prove that you are a student or teacher to buy it, but
they won't be able to tell you are a student or not at activation time.
That makes it like an honor system. Iirc they now sell something called
Home and Student instead.
