Office XP Professional Upgrade (2002) installation problems

Hi,
I have installed Office XP Small Business on my new laptop which runs on
vista. The Small Business discs came with my older laptop which used to run
Windows 2000 Pro. I am trying to install the Office XP Professional Upgrade
Version 2002, but keep getting the "Error 1608; Set up was unable to locate a
qualifying product". The upgrade disc was purchased retail and the box says
that Office Small business is a qualifying product for the upgrade. The
upgrade used to work fine on my older laptop. I have tried all the tricks,
i.e. replacing the disk with the Small Business version and pointing it to
c-drive, but to no avail. Please help......Thanks.

If the Small Business version came with your computer, it is OEM, and will
not work for upgrade purposes, as it is tied to that specific computer.

Thanks for answering Tom. If I am getting this right, even though the XP
upgrade worked on my previous machine, in my new computer I can only use the
Small business version and not the upgrade in my new machine. Its hard to
rationalize. Do I have any options or will I just have to shell out more
money to get powerpoint and access.

As I said, the OEM version that came with your computer is tied to that
computer. It will not work as a qualifying product on your new computer.
Your options are to purchase the full version, or download the free
non-microsoft Open Office.

Your problem is that you are trying to do a cross upgrade from one edition
of Office XP {Small Business} to another edition of Office XP
{Professional}. Office XP does not accept such an upgrade (Office 2007,
however, does}.

OEM versions of Office can be used as a qualifying product provide it is
installed, you have the Microsoft installation disc or an acceptable copy
and it is otherwise a qualifying product for the intended upgrade.

Don,
Thanks for the reply. I still have all the OEM Office XP Small business
discs and thats what I used to install it in my new machine. It works fine.
The upgrade disc which was purchased retail from best buy is the one that
refuses to install. The Office XP Professional upgrade box does say that
Office XP Small Business is a qualifying upgrade. Its a hopeless situation.

The upgrade disk won't recognize it because it was an OEM version.

You keep posting that you want to upgrade from Office XP Small Business to
Office XP Professional {upgrade version}.
That is a cross upgrade and Office XP does not accept cross upgrades {Office
2007 does}. Please refer to the following for qualifying products for
upgrade to Office XP:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/290540/EN-US/

Note that you will find Office 97 Small Business and Office 2000 Small
Business listed as qualifying products. You will not find Office XP Small
Business listed as a qualifying product.

You may need to install Microsoft Office XP, because it is very compatible
with laptop computers and desktop computers that have integrated video memory
cards. Somehow, Windows Vista may have some backward compatibility issues
that are bad.
