Office XP SP1 installation: Error 1328

O

Oleg

Hello, when trying to install Office XP Service Pack 1
always get an error message: "Error 1328. Error aplying
patch to file C:/Config.Msi/PTF07.tmp It has probably been
updated by other means, and can no longer be modified by
this patch. For more information contact your patch
vendor." Tried to reinstall Office but all the same... Any
ideas? Thanks in advance.

Hi Oleg,

There can be a problem with installing the update
if the MS Installer copy you have is not the current
version or if it is damaged, which may happen with
the recent worm and patch activities and that can
be fixed.

If you've already updated/repaired the registry settings
for MS Installer v2, and this failure is on a
'MS Office XP Professional with Frontpage'
titled package you purchased you may have been conned.

That Edition was not, if I recall correctly,
sold by Microsoft as a retail package
http://microsoft.com/office/howtobuy/choosing.asp
and you may want to report the seller to (e-mail address removed)
if you were led to believe it was a valid Microsoft retail
(end user) licensed software package.

The copies that fail on SP1 update are often a prerelease
edition of a MS volume license holder copy of the
edition listed above. If you look in
the patch setup log files (type %TEMP% in Start=>Run)
and the version of Office listed in that text file log
is 10.2627.0 rather than 10.2627.01 it's not a valid
MS Office package, and updating a non-MS retail product
isn't supported by MS updates from
http://office.microsoft.com/productupdates
See http://support.microsoft.com/?fr=1&kbid=315152 for
additional details.

You may see someone post a link to a website with
a workaround that involves using an Office Admin Point.
No MS Office XP retail package license code can
create an Office Admin point and the
'workaround' web sites that are sometimes
posted here use the creation of an Admin point as the
workaround, another indication that the software may
not be valid retail product if that workaround works.

MS Office XP retail product support in the U.S. includes unlimited
installation support and (except for the Office XP
Student and Teachers Edition_ two no cost non-installation issues.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;en-us;Prodoffer74a
(other countries may be different).

MS Volume license agreements start with as few as 5 MS
product licenses (not all have to be Office)

Thank you Bob, for all this information. I checked all the
possible solutions you gave me and came to conslusion that
my case is neither the first (damaged Windows Installer)
nor the second (my Office version is above 10.2627.0.). I
would try that installation with the Admin point but that
sounds too complicated for me.. Any other solutions maybe?
Thanks.
