Office XP to Office 2003

When I loaded Office 2003 onto my system, for some reason it did not delete Office XP. Now I have both which is causing multiple conflicts. I uninstalled Office XP thru Add/Remove programs, but I cannot seem to get XP totally uninstalled. When I go back into Add/Remove programs, it's back. Sometimes when I open an Excel document, It wants to load Office XP to open. Still working on the problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'd try:

First, uninstall Office 2003.
RE-install Office XP and make sure that Office XP works correctly, i.e., no
pieces of Office 2003 remaining.
Uninstall Office XP.
Install Office 2003.
