OFFICE XP UPDATES

B

Bob

After installing the Office XP/2002 Updates, I can not
longer open any files. Error boxes indicate "file is not
available" in WORD and "Can Not read file" in EXCEL.
Has to be related to updates, as it was working fine
before then. What can I do to correct this?

I haven't seen this issue before. Have you tried running a repair of Office?

This is caused by a conflict with the Norton Office Plug-in. See "OFF:
Cannot Open Office Documents or Cannot Edit Inserted Objects After You
Install Office XP Service Pack 2 or Office 2000 Service Pack 3" at

Hi,
Thanks for the advice. I am using McAfee and not Norton. Any ideas on how to overcome this problem. Thanks and BR Ghengis

Courtesy of Office MVP Beth Melton:

If Norton AV was installed at one time then the DLL for the Office
Plug-in could still be registered.

Search for : officeav.dll

If you find it then go to Start/Run and run the following command:

regsvr32 /u "<path>\officeav.dll"

Here is a KB article that provides a few additional details. It does
not include information on Norton CE but it will contain additional
details on the unregister command if you need them:
