Office XP with FrontPage - Problems Applying Service Pack 1

W

Wm. Early

I have a year-old Dell computer running Windows XP Home
Edition. All upgrades and patches are applied. Office
2000 was upgraded to Office XP with FrontPage months ago
and runs great.

Problem: I can't install Office XP Service Pack 1
(English version).

I get the following error message:

Error 1328. Error applying patch to file
C:\Config.Msi\PT1E7.tmp. It has probably been updated by
other means and can no longer be modified by this patch.

Hi Wm.,

Using the information in this article
http://support.microsoft.com/?fr=1&kbid=315152
locate the setup logs for Office XP Service Pack1
(SP1) in a subfolder of your Temporary Files folder and see
what the version listed is for Office XP in the log file,
not in the mentioned .INI file (as those can be modified).
(you can get to your temporary files folder by typing %TEMP%
from Start=>Run).

If the version of Office XP Professional + Front Page
shown in that log file is 10.2627.0 then it is
an edition not sold by Microsoft and updating via
http://officeupdate.microsoft.com isn't provided by Microsoft
(FWIW, MS doesn't have software for retail customers
that is sold in CD only form) and the MS supported
method for solving the problem is as listed in the
above MS Knowledge Base article if you have 10.2627.0)

If it's 10.2627.1 per that log file (not the .ini file)
then it can be a problem with either the MS Installer
or from not first shutting down all other software
utilities and antivirus.
