Do you have install disk? Do you have a valid key to unlock the
install? If it has been installed on another machine, does the version you
have allow an additional install?

Uninstall any trial version of office 2007, together with an activation
assistant, reboot PC.
Insert your Office disk & install - this asumes office xp is a retail
edition and not oem

I have been getting a "Product Compliance Check" error message: "setup failed
to locate a valid qualifying product on your machine. Select the drive where
the qualifying product can be found". When I select C,D or E drive, I get
another error message "setup was unable to locate a valid qualifying product"
or "wrong OS". I have Office XP Professional 2002 version, and my OS is
Vista. I have successfully installed this disk on another computer in the
past, and do have the product key that came with the software. Thanks for any
input.

As far as I can tell, I do not have a trial version of Microsoft Office on
my laptop. The only thing I have that came with the laptop is "Microsoft
Office Powerpoint Viewer 2007"

That means your OfficeXP version is an upgrade version and as such you need
a qualifying application in order to install it
eg An earlier version of Works maybe?
You dont have to install the qualifying product, you just need the cd
available to point when the office installation complains.

It would seem a little odd to have Powerpoint Viewer installed, on its own,
by default.

Well that likely is the problem. You have an upgrade version of Office.
It requires that you have a Microsoft product installed and activated on the
machine you are trying to install your Office XP Professional program on. I
would guess that you new machine does not have a qualifying product
installed and activated. The original packaging should list the qualifying
progam(s). It may be a prior version or it may be a lower version like
Microsoft Works.

Re-reading my message I can see how someone might believe I was
suggesting that this or that program was a qualifying product. It was my
intent to indicate that a qualifying product like Works, [but Works might
not be a qualify product in this example]

I believe that some versions of Works are qualifying products for SOME,
but not all, upgrade paths.

Thanks for clarifying that for the OP.

Some upgrade products will install if you go to a subdirectory and run the
proper executable. Just a thought.
