Office2007, revert to drop-down menus. NEW ONES ARE TOO BIG!!

R

RP

I just installed Office 2007 Beta2. I find the menus in the tool bar are way
too big. They're driving me nuts. I might uninstall just so I can revert to
the minimal menu tool bar options of Office2003.

Is there a way to shrink them down?

Hi R.P.,

The ribbon doesn't resize vertically.

You can move the Quick Access toolbar (QAT) [the one that has 'undo' on it, and that you can customize, to be above or below the
ribbon by right clicking on it.

You can use Ctrl+F1, or click on the currently active Ribbon tab to show/hide the ribbon.

Be sure to send your feedback directly to Microsoft by using the send-a-smile feedback tool, from the link below.

Thanks for your help Bob,

The one feature in Office2007 that I REALLY wanted was the expandable Excel
formula bar - which works great! But I've reverted to Office 2003 for now. I
don't want to be stuck with 2007 in February if I choose not to upgrade right
away.

Any chance you folks could write a patch so we could update Excel2003 for
the expandable formula bar???? (That would be so awesome!!)

My one strong suggestion about "the ribbon" is: why not keep a classic
drop-down menu option AND a ribbon option for viewing menus. I realize you
have added many features that would increase the size of drop-down menus.
But, for example, my "Favorites" menu in IExplorer is huge, but I don't mind.
This would help us 'advanced Office users' ease into using "the ribbon", if
it turns out to be that useful.

I see you and JoAnn are tasked with defending Office2007. Good luck. :)

I'm not really defending Office 2007. Personally I've been advising people
not to download the beta unless they can do it on a system that is not used

needs to be prepared to lose files and reformat the hard drive at any

Wow. This is going nowhere fast.

I'm sorry I engaged in the snarky exchange on "defending Office2007". My
comment on defending 2007 was a very minor one. I wish I would have left it
out becasue we've missed the point. I like Excel and Word and Access. I use
them a lot. But the arrangement of icons and toolbars is not what limits my
productivity at work. I like to keep them as simple and as small as possible.
The new features of 2007 are great, like the expandable formual bar in Excel
and the new layout in Access. But my one point still stands:

Why not leave a classic drop-down menu option available?

Longer drop-down menus aren't a big deal. This way you'd keep your whiney,
long-time users like me happy and allow intro/novice users to learn the
ribbon if it makes it easier for them. I just don't need massive icons and
menus for all the features I already know too well.

Just a suggestion folks.

Cheers.

I can tell you that I'm not especially a fan of the ribbon interface but I
haven't tried it yet either. I don't care for the look of it (looks like
they've dumbed down the menu items to me) however I may change my mind
if/when I get an unused computer beefed up enough to run the beta.

Unfortunately, you are wrong. I used both Word 2007 and Excel 2007 for over a
week. Microsoft has made the same mistake that WordPerfect made. WordPerfect
was the leader in word-processing with WordPerfect 5. They lost their
installed base when they made a Windows product with a totally different look
and feel.

Although in principle the new GUI may be better, the retraining will be too
expensive for much of the installed base. This is really a shame because the
new file technology and use of XML schemas is a great improvement. I still
keep Word 2007 on my computer, but only for special work on production of
documents from my XML schemas

In the case of Outlook 2007, there is a technical problem it crashes. I
would still like to know how to revert back to Outlook 2003.

After furious head scratching, rleif asked:

| Unfortunately, you are wrong. I used both Word 2007 and Excel 2007
| for over a week. Microsoft has made the same mistake that WordPerfect
| made. WordPerfect was the leader in word-processing with WordPerfect
| 5. They lost their installed base when they made a Windows product
| with a totally different look and feel.
|
| Although in principle the new GUI may be better, the retraining will
| be too expensive for much of the installed base. This is really a
| shame because the new file technology and use of XML schemas is a
| great improvement. I still keep Word 2007 on my computer, but only
| for special work on production of documents from my XML schemas
|
| In the case of Outlook 2007, there is a technical problem it crashes.
| I would still like to know how to revert back to Outlook 2003.

||
||| Thanks for your help Bob,
|||
||| The one feature in Office2007 that I REALLY wanted was the
||| expandable Excel formula bar - which works great! But I've reverted
||| to Office 2003 for now. I don't want to be stuck with 2007 in
||| February if I choose not to upgrade right away.
|||
||| Any chance you folks could write a patch so we could update
||| Excel2003 for the expandable formula bar???? (That would be so
||| awesome!!)
|||
||| My one strong suggestion about "the ribbon" is: why not keep a
||| classic drop-down menu option AND a ribbon option for viewing
||| menus. I realize you have added many features that would increase
||| the size of drop-down menus. But, for example, my "Favorites" menu
||| in IExplorer is huge, but I don't mind. This would help us
||| 'advanced Office users' ease into using "the ribbon", if it turns
||| out to be that useful.
|||
||| I see you and JoAnn are tasked with defending Office2007. Good luck.
||| :)

From personal experience, a week is not long enough. It took me around a
month, but once I got the hang of it, I never wanted to go back.
I just wanted to make clear that Microsoft will not provide a "Classic"
view (old UI style view). This has been requested over and over, but MS
has soundly rejected it for a lot of reasons (read the Why the UI Posts
in Jensen Harris blog. Search for his name on Google to find the blog).
Although in principle the new GUI may be better, the retraining will be too
expensive for much of the installed base. This is really a shame because the
new file technology and use of XML schemas is a great improvement. I still
keep Word 2007 on my computer, but only for special work on production of
documents from my XML schemas
Microsoft is convinced that a lot of companies will undergo the major
retraining effort and convert to 2007.
In the case of Outlook 2007, there is a technical problem it crashes. I
would still like to know how to revert back to Outlook 2003.
If you have Adobe Acrobat Pro 6/7 installed, go into Control Panel,
Add/Remove Programs, Change Adobe Acrobat Pro 6/7 (not the reader) and
remove the Office & Outlook plugins. This is the most common cause for a
crash in Outlook 2007.

To send your unhappiness about the new UI to Microsoft, please use the
tool Bob indicated to you.

Hard work does not necessarily equate with good judgment (see Invading Moscow
in Winter, sailing an unsinkable boat with too few lifeboats, launching New
Coke ...)
The Fisher-Pricing of MS Office is a sad state of affairs, promoted by folks
with 21" monitors and 20-20 eyesight, who can afford the real-estate loss of
screen space, and don't care to customize their interface for most efficient
use.

One man's trash is another man's treasure. Your opinion does not negate the
opposite views. They are merely opinions. I, and many many others, are
firmly in the "other" camp than yours.

Humm, guess you don't care for it, but then what is considered "good
judgment" is pretty subjective too. ;-)
