Offixe XP STD ED. crash when clicking file menu button

M

Mick Unger

Just installed windows office XP standard for students
and teachers on my daughters computer. Whe word
application opens and all functions work, with the
exception of the ability to click the file drop down menu
button. Every time I attempt this action the program
launches a warning screen stating that word has
encountered a problem and needs to close, additionaly it
has the option to recover the work and restart the
program. If this is done the program relaunches and all
items work except the file menu button, again the same
warning.

I have disabled the norton office plug in, and deleted
all printers in the control panel.

I do not know what else I can do.

Any help on this issue?

Hi Mick,

Are you referring to the File menu or the drop down list in File/Open
or File/Save As?

Additionally, does the issue occur when you start Word using the /a
switch? Go to Start/Run and run:

winword /a

Note the space before the forward slash.

If the error does not occur then the problem could be caused by a
global template/add-in. To determine if you are using any global
templates go to Tools/Templates and Add-Ins and see if there are any
global templates or add-ins listed. If so they are located in one of
your Startup folders. The location of the Word\Startup folder can be
found under Tools/Options/File Locations and the Office\Startup folder
can be found in the Office installation path..

Take a look in each folder and if you find more than one file move
them one at a time and try duplicating the error after each file is
moved out of the folder until you determine which one is causing the
problem.

(1) File Menu Button is the problem

(2) You recommended "Go to Start/Run and run: winword /a"
This session worked and did not get error, but when
checking the file locations mentioned I did not see the
items you mentioned, what else to do?

Thanks for your response.

If you went to Tools/Templates and Add-ins and did not find global
templates in the list then try the following:

1. Locate Normal.dot and rename it to OldNormal.dot. Word will create
a new one upon starting.

If this resolves the problem, any customizations can be copied to the
new Normal.dot via the Organizer (Tools/Templates and Add-Ins) Once
this is complete OldNormal.dot can be discarded.

2. Exit Word and in the Registry navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Word\Data

and rename the Data key to OldData. Word will create a new one upon
restarting

As always, prior to making any changes to the Registry you should
review "Backing up the Registry" and "Restoring the Registry" in the
Registry Help.

In this situation you may want to use the Registry/Export Registry
file command, export your selected branch, and delete the key. That
way if you find the change wasn't necessary or incorrect, you can
merge the deleted branch back to the Registry by double-clicking the
resulting file.

In addition, I'd like to follow up on your statement that you "deleted all
printers in the control panel." Generally speaking, Word requires a printer
driver (installed locally) to run correctly. You do not have to have a
printer physically connected to the computer.

Actually Word will function correctly without a printer driver
installed.

It fails when the printer driver it is searching for is corrupt or
unavailable. Unfortunately instead of operating as though no printer
is installed it crashes.

Somehow I still can't get my mind 'round that. <g> Did we decide that this
varies from version to version, or is that true for all?

B

Beth Melton

It's true for all except Word 2003.

Word 2003 will not crash exactly but you will encounter an error
message telling you the printer can not be found and do you want to
locate it yourself. Still not the best solution but it's better than
crashing.

I am using Word 200 with Windows XP. After entering several picture or graphs into a WORD doucment, I am unable to save the document. I get the dreaded blue sceen Microsoft has encountered an error message. The documents are not terribly large. I have tried disk clean-up, removing temporary files, disenabling Norton Anti-virun add-ins, and tried but was not able to uninstall the Microsoft Suite Works add-in for Word. I found these fixes on the site but have not been successful. PLEASE ADVISE...I am desperate with a deadline in 2 days
