Offline Folders to Automatically Sync

I would like to setup as a default when a user creates a new folder in
Outlook 2003 that it automatically sync for offline use. Can this be setup
as a default or must the user mannually set each folder they create?

Outlook 2003 in Cached Exchange mode automatically syncs all mailbox
folders.

Sue,

When I go into Send/Receive and edit the group in question, I see a number
of the folders that the user created not checked. I know that many of these
folders were created by the user, but without the check to download the email
and attachments, they are not synced with the exchange server. I know I can
do check this selection manually, but when the folders are created in Outlook
2003 can I have that setting done automatically or is my choice manual only.
Am I totally offbase?

Dave

But are you in Cached Exchange mode or classic offline folders mode? It
makes a huge difference.

Thanks for being so persistent. I did check before I posted this and I noted
that the Cached Exchange mode on the mail client was checked.

The way Cached Exchange mode works, while the user is online, every item in
every folder in the user's mailbox is cached to the offline store on the
local machine automatically. You don't need to set up any synchronization
properties in the send/receive group settings.

However, if the user customarily works in offline mode (check File | Work
Offline or the icon at the lower right of the Outlook window), send/receive
group settings do apply.

So, the next things we need to look at are:

(a) Are the folders being created in the user's mailbox or a public folder?
(b) Is the user working online or offline when these folders are created?

The folders are being created in the user's mailbox and are many times
created when the user is working offline.

I went back and tested OL2000 and OL2002, as well as OL2003, to confirm that
the behavior changed in OL2002. From then on, you have to manually set
synchronization on any folder created offline.

This makes me nervous. It would be all to easy for a user working offline to
create a folder for an important project and never get it synced up to the
server.

I guess the moral of the story is that even users who work primary offline
ought to go online once in a while to make sure their full mailbox is synced
with the offline copy.

Sue, Thanks for the confirmation. We can work around that. I believe your
are correct, this feature to sync these files should be a default, not the
exception. Thanks for the help. Dave
