OL 2003 screen flashes

I have a customer that is experiencing screen flashes in
OL 2003 in the Inbox portion of the screen. He states
that the messages in his Inbox section are flashing. He
states that the tree on the left is not flashing. I have
had him open up MS Word and it is fine. He opens up the
individual messages and they are fine. Again, the only
problem is with the Inbox portion.
