OL 2003: SEND stopped working - messages stay in Outbox

I live on Outlook

A few days ago, Outbox messages are not sent to my ISP if either

-MS Word (2003) is the default message editor)
or
-SEND IMMEDIATE box is not checked.

So this means that if I send email while I'm working offline, these
messages never get sent.

In the Outbox, these messages are not italicized, but the SENT column
is "none."

I tried opening the messages in the Outbox and editing, then SENDing
them again, but the messages still aren't sent. That is, the
messages still aren't italicized.

What is going on here?

This is a home office setup, so there is no IT department to turn to.
