OL2003/WinXP - Spell check not catching errors first time around...

I have an odd problem and have searched both Usenet as well as MSFT
support to no avail.

I am running Outlook 2003 SP1 on Win XP Professional SP2.

If I reply to an HTML message and check spelling of my content (before
sending, of course) by highlighting and pressing F7, Outlook gives me
the usual "Finished checking the selection. Do you want to check the
rest of the items." message - even if there are blatant spelling
errors!!! If instead I were to Save my message and then reopen it to
try the highlight+F7 experiment again, then Outlook works as expected.
Help!

FWIW, I am not using Word 2003 as my email editor and I do not have
"Always check spelling before sending" turned on.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions...

Are you typing the reply at the top or within the message? Spell check only
checks the original and when you quote inline, it won't spell-check the new
text.

1. I am typing at the top.

2. It shouldn't matter where I am typing, since as I indicated before:
-- I highlight the area I want to spell check and then press F7 which
doesn't work the first time around (only for HTML)
-- After saving and reopening the message, highlighting and pressing
F7 works the second time around.

Your response, although appreciated, did not factor in what I described
in my original problem statement.
