OLAP Cube Build Times

R

Randy

Our OLAP Cube takes a different amount of time to build every night. One night it may take three hours and then the next take 7! I attended IILs Blue Belt Course a month ago and the instructor seemed to think the cube should never take more than and hour or two. Whenever I ask our back-end support folks what's going on they just shrug and say they don't receive any error messages and to be patient. Are there any guidelines available as to how long the cube should take based on number of projects, etc...

Thanks!

Take a look on the site, and see if a 2002 edition is available. If not, use the 2003 edition as a proxy. Project 2003 uses the same process for cube builds as 2002, so there shouldn’t be any marked changes

Good Luck

Would this apply to PS 2002 as well?

Randy:

It shouldn't vary as much as you're quoting unless some other unusual
conditions exist, such as other processes running on the same server or you
suddenly decreased or increased the database side. Your instructor gave you
bad information as it could conceivably take a day or more to build the cube
if your database is large enough. This is purely a function of database size
and server power, but subject to influence by bad data or external
interference as previously mentioned.
