old files print correctly in excel97 but light gray in excel2003

Using old spreadsheets from excel97 on my new computer with excel2003, some
pages print correctly and some print the entire page (including text and
borders) in light gray instead of black. This can be different for different
sheets (tabs) within the same workbook.

Among pages that print correctly and others that don't, they all look
correct in print preview, and seem to have the same settings. Print setup
settings appear to be correct. Text and border color settings are correct.
'Normal' (not draft) print quality is selected in printer options.

On new files created in excel2003, the print color is correct, including
when the data is copied and pasted into it from one of the excel97 files.
However, when an entire sheet (workbook tab) is copied to a new workbook, the
light gray printing problem then happens on that sheet in the new workbook,
too.

Can anyone help?
