Old meeting request reappears days later as an unread item;

Situation:
User was sent an internal meeting request on Jan 4 which he accepted (using
Outlook 2000 client). The meeting request was removed from his inbox and the
meeting was posted in his calendar (normal behaviour). Last night the
Exchange 2003 server and Domain Controller were rebooted. This user never
logs out. This morning the above meeting request reappeared as an unread item
in the his inbox. It was date and time stamped the same as the original
request. Mesage tracking only shows the delivery of the original request on
Jan 4th

Question:
Does anyone know what may have happened here? I have had similar problems
with meeting reminders coming back after they had been dismissed. I wonder
if the problems are related.
