on closing inbox item it gets deleted - why

After opening an item from my inbox I close it either by using the "close"
button or from the "close" option in the "file" menu, the item gets deleted.
It is not within the deleted items box. I am able to save the item somewhere
else before I close but then whatever the item is - it gets deleted. Why is
this? I have checked my set up and I cannot seem to find a rule that enables
this action to be carried out.

Check your view settings - sounds like you're hiding read messages.
